The pivotal work being done across our campus is reflective of our professors who are dedicated to finding solutions to some of the world's most pressing issues. Over in the political science department, Monti Datta is committed to combating modern-day slavery — and his recent $33,000 grant from the The Achelis & Bodman Foundation is furthering his research.

“More than 40 million people are in modern slavery, and little is still understood in terms of best practices to liberate enslaved persons and help them reintegrate into society with dignity,” Datta said.

He plans to look more closely at anti-trafficking organizations and assess the effectiveness of NGOs in liberating enslaved people. Along with education professor Bob Spires, Datta will conduct research in Assam, India, this summer and The Arise Foundation will launch his report on trust and anti-slavery at the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C. in fall 2020.

We’re proud of all of the important work Dr. Datta and others are doing that have global implications.
