First UR team competes in international biology competition

Richmond students are certainly known to take it up a notch — working hard to achieve the goals they set for themselves, and setting new records while they’re at it.

For the first time ever, a team of Spider scientists is heading to compete in an international synthetic biology competition. Dubbed iGEM, the International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition provides the opportunity to showcase boundary-pushing research — like UR’s project about a plant pathogen known to cause millions of dollars of yearly crop damage. 

“It’s a great opportunity for our undergraduate research students to participate in a competition of this magnitude that is so well-regarded in the scientific community,” said the team’s mentor and professor Daniel Pierce.

We’re excited for our students to learn from others around the world — and show them a thing or two, too!
