Around campus, our students and faculty have a knack for being first — the first to pursue a new branch of research or the first to win a certain scholarship or two.

Well we’re excited for a new “first” — Joanna Hejl, ’20, has been named UR’s first-ever Beinecke Scholar. The prestigious award provides more than $30,000 to support graduate studies in the arts, humanities, or social sciences. Hejl is planning to pursue a Ph.D. in either American Studies or history.

“I look forward to putting history, especially that of racism and exclusion, to work in the field of public humanities,” Hejl said. “I believe that by finding ways to share the legacies of racist practices that mar our communities, I will help others understand why they are still problems that must be addressed.”

Congratulations, Joanna!
