Faculty/student bonds flourish at UR

While we rank among the nation’s best in many ways, we know one aspect of Richmond that truly sets us apart — the strong bonds between students and professors that aren’t confined to the classroom.

The mentorship and comradery that we know and love was on full display last week as a group of six faculty members from across the sciences organized a student-faculty indoor rock climbing night. A total of 32 students joined professors Prateek Bhakta and Jory Denny (computer science), Miles Johnson and Ryan Coppage (chemistry), and Mariama Rebello de Sousa Dias and Timothy Hamilton (economics).

“Events like this allow students to see that we faculty are quite human — mistakes, falls, and limitations abound,” Coppage said. “It helps students see us as approachable and allows for classroom dynamics to be more personal.”

We love hearing stories that not only showcase student fun, but also the lifelong relationships that begin at Richmond.
