Here at Richmond, we strive to make our education accessible to all who are destined to be Spiders. And when it comes to encouraging students to enter the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, our efforts are getting noticed.

Our URISE program, which is an acronym for UR’s Integrated Science Experience, has received the 2018 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, higher education’s largest and oldest diversity and inclusion publication.

This award honors colleges and universities that support students from underrepresented groups entering various fields of science. URISE exemplifies this charge — focusing on skill development, providing authentic research experiences, and building a community of support for 24 students before they even start classes.

“URISE takes two main hallmarks of a Richmond education — close faculty relationships and hands-on research — to provide students generally underrepresented in the STEM fields a high quality and distinct educational experience,” President Ronald A. Crutcher said. “This recognition is a testament to the success of the URISE concept and the commitment of our faculty mentors.”

We are proud to be a role model for others with the URISE program!
