Spider Pride

When our Spiders have opportunities to expand their studies, they are determined to make the most of them. Alice Vo, ’20, is the latest undergrad to receive the selective Gilman Scholarship for her semester abroad.

Vo is majoring in anthropology and history and is minoring in Chinese studies. While in Beijing, she plans to study Mandarin, Chinese history, economics, women’s studies, and social sciences. She also plans to spend time volunteering.

Vo is among our record-breaking set of Gilman scholars this year, and while we’re proud of their ambition, we’re also proud other organizations are noticing and rewarding them.

“As a first-generation college student, I thought I would never have the opportunity to study abroad,” Vo said. “However, the University of Richmond and the Gilman Scholarship changed my mind. I feel incredibly grateful to have this experience.”

The study abroad experience is a hallmark of a Richmond education and we’re thrilled Alice is taking advantage of it. Congratulations to her and the rest of our Gilman scholars!
