Lax teams sweep conference tourneys

Classes may be over, but it was a busy weekend at Robins Stadium. Our men’s and women’s lacrosse programs hosted their respective conference championship games — and won both in nail-biting overtime victories.

We know Spiders strive for success, so it’s no surprise their stellar performances this season paved the way to conference titles — as well as Richmond being the only Division I program to snag automatic bids to both the men’s and women’s NCAA tournaments.

The Spider men won their first-ever Southern Conference Tournament championship by defeating Jacksonville 11-10. And, for the second time in program history, the men's team is heading to the NCAA Tournament.

"It's an indescribable feeling … it was a remarkable performance to win the championship in front of our crowd,” head coach Dan Chemotti said.

The winning spirit continued throughout the weekend as our women’s team became the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament Champions for the first time since 2007. They defeated the top-seeded University of Massachusetts, who has held the title for the past nine years. For the fourth time in program history, our team is heading to the NCAA tournament.

We’d be remiss not to mention that our lacrosse programs have seven conference championships combined, and our new athletic director, John Hardt, was recently named the Division I men’s lacrosse committee chair.
