Our students are passionate about their endeavors, whether they’re academic, philanthropic or athletic. The best part for us is when our Spiders are recognized by others for their hard work and we get to brag about it.

Erin Wheeler, ’18, is our newest example because she was named the 2018 U.S. Collegiate Athlete of the Year at the U.S. Collegiate Synchronized Swimming Championship in Arizona last month.

This honor is especially significant because it was based on community service, academic and athletic merit among both varsity and club teams across the country. The 16 national teams in attendance at the championship voted on our very own Spider to take home the title of best all-around student athlete.

Wheeler joined the team during her freshman year and quickly assumed a leadership position as captain. Through her hard work and determination, she was able to help the team jump from the club level to championship level status alongside her teammates and coaches Asha Bandal, Caroline Weist and Cabell Edmunds.

“It feels so good to be recognized by my peers and by all of the coaches who voted for me to receive this award,” Wheeler said. “I feel that I have done my team and USA Synchro proud, and I can’t imagine a more memorable way my collegiate synchro career could have come to a finish.”

Congratulations, Erin! We are so proud to have dedicated athletes like you at UR!
