Richmond’s incredible commitment to study abroad is well-known. What many may not know is how this is especially true when it comes to expanding study abroad access and affordability to all students.

For instance, our financial aid packages travel with students when they go abroad. Not to mention we have rock-star students who win top fellowships to support study abroad.

We’re proud of our three new Gilman Scholars this year. The scholarship, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, is open to U.S. citizens enrolled as undergraduates who receive Pell grants while attending two- and four-year colleges. UR has had 18 Gilman Scholars since the program started in 2001.

  • Esteban Angeles, ’19, is majoring in the philosophy, politics, economics, and law program with a concentration in politics and minoring in German studies. His award will support study abroad this fall in Freiburg, Germany, through the Institute for the International Education of Students’ European Union program.
  • Madeleine Jordan-Lord, ’18, is majoring in American studies. Jordan-Lord used her award to fund a study abroad spring semester at Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain.
  • Madeline Widjaja, ’19, is majoring in chemistry. Widjaja recently completed a study abroad program in Kazakhstan through her scholarship.

More than 65 percent of University of Richmond students complete a study abroad experience before graduating, and we’re excited for everything these students will experience (or have already experienced) around the world.

Congrats to our latest Gilmans! Also, don’t forget to send back pictures
