Richmond celebrates National Spider Day

March 14, 2017

Spider Pride

Happy National Spider Day! To some people, March 14 is best known as Pi Day, or maybe the eve of the Ides of March. But for us, it’s a reason to celebrate the country's only spider mascot.

We're dialing up the arachnophoria and Spider spirit by wearing Richmond’s colors and Spider gear. And on campus, Webstur and eight resident tarantulas made special appearances.

Students, faculty, and staff took photos with giant spider cut-outs and celebrated spider-themed dining options around campus, including four varieties of Spider sushi rolls from a local vendor and even — gulp — the chance to sample foods made from crickets. You know, just like a spider would eat!

You can see highlights from today above, but we think this quote from our live mascot’s caretaker, Jennifer O'Donnell, sums it up perfectly:

"Spiders are fascinating creatures, and we are grateful for the opportunity to keep learning and sharing our love of all spiders."
